Preparing Your Wedding Liturgy

You can arrange the time for your wedding rehearsal at the parish office. Wedding rehearsals usually are held on Thursday evenings. Who should attend the rehearsal:

• Members of the wedding party
• Parents of the bride and groom
• Lectors who will proclaim the readings and announce the general intercessions

The rehearsal will be done in a 30 minute time span. A parish wedding coordinator is the principal talker and director of the rehearsal. If a visiting priest or deacon will be witnessing your marriage, he should also conduct the rehearsal.

Promptness at the rehearsal is very important since we cannot begin until everyone involved in the wedding ceremony is present.

To allow for a smooth and quick rehearsal, we ask that you decide the following before arriving in church for the rehearsal:
1. Bridesmaids/Groomsmen—assign partners and the order and manner in which they are to process.
2. Bring your marriage license to the rehearsal.
3. Make a list of the readings you have selected for the wedding. The readings will be read from the Lectionary (a special liturgical book). The Lectionary will be properly marked before the wedding. The lectors you choose are to report to the sacristy fifteen minutes before the wedding to check the Lectionary and to address further questions.
4. Those who will bring the gifts of bread and wine to the altar during the Preparation of the Gifts, if you are celebrating Mass.
5. Rings—it is recommended that the best man carry the bride and groom’s rings in his coat pocket. Ring bearers may carry the actual rings if you desire, though many are reluctant to place expensive jewelry on the pillow of a young ring bearer.
6. If you are going to use one, bring your "unity candle set" to the rehearsal.
